Important Tips to Know When Choosing Tombstones

When you are faced with the loss of a loved one, tombstones are one of the last things you want to think about. That being said it is important to choose one that represents your loved one and who they were. There are many things to consider when choosing a tombstone. Here are some important tips to know when choosing tombstones for a loved one.

Cemetery Rules

The first thing you will want to think about is the location and rules of the cemetery. Each location has its own set of standards that must be followed. This could include restrictions on size, upright designs, vase placement, and even type of headstones. If you are planning ahead for your future needs you will want to contact the cemetery and ask if they have any restrictions concerning tombstones.

Material

Once you have discovered the rules of your cemetery you will need to pick a material for your desired tombstones. The material can be marble, granite, or bronze with a matte finish, shiny finish or a combination of all. Of these, granite will be the strongest but comes with a higher price tag. Marble is a strong material that will have a lower upfront cost, however, may require replacement sooner than granite. You will need to weigh the options and choose what best suits your needs and desires.

Design

After choosing the material you will be ready to choose the design. Headstones are made in many different designs including flat tablet, upright, double tombstones, and many other options. You will want to pick a design that will suit any desired accessories. Accessories are added features like angels or crosses. These will play a part in the type of design you choose when looking at tombstones.

Engravings

The finishing step with tombstones is the engravings. You will need to decide what words and or dates will be etched in the stone. You may also choose to have a picture engraved in the stone during design. The engraving will be the time to choose what lasting memory you want to have.

Choosing for Yourself

One final thing you have to think about is choosing tombstones for yourself. This will allow you to have a say in what your headstone says about you. This also takes care of a task that your loved ones may not want to deal with after your passing. Losing someone is a hard time and the fewer decisions you leave unmade the easier it will be for those you leave behind.

Now that you know the cemetery rules regarding tombstones, have chosen the material, design, and engravings you are ready to leave your mark for the future. After all, headstones are the storytellers of the past. They represent what was important about those that have gone before us.
